A Trip to the National Museum of Singapore

In Singapore, the 1st and 2nd day of the Chinese New Year Celebration is a public holiday. Most shops are closed, the beaches are overcrowded and available taxis are scarce on those days. What to do and where to go for fun?

Head down to the National Museum of Singapore! Hehe… We went there mainly because it was free entry. We had a hearty lunch at home before heading there. Better have our stomach filled first as the touring the museum might take awhile and most eateries are closed anyway. When we reached there, guess what, we realized that forgot to bring our cameras! Hahaha… Thus, we had to depend on our camera phones. Here are some of the pictures we took:

So History… Is there a sure way to determine that the History that we are educated with is true and complete? That is the question that popped into our mind after touring the Singapore History Gallery.

Cycling in Pulau Ubin

Vin has a lot of foreign colleagues (all from India) who have been in Singapore for quite some time and yet have not been to Pulau Ubin. So he was trying to be a good host by organizing this cycling trip for them. It was a last minute arrangement but everything was set and finalized on Monday. We were expecting a group of 6 (including us) on this trip, Sumant, Shadap, Negi and his wife.

Vin was so enthusiastic that he even came up with an itinerary for the day. Wait! No, he created the itinerary because he is a “Scheduled Man”. As mentioned on the previous post, he has this “sickness” that he has to have a schedule for his haircut. Well in actual fact, he follows a schedule for almost everything that he does.

Anyway, only 3 turned up on that day. It was just Sumant and us. Being the food lover that we are, we brought too much food. Things we brought (excluding Sumant’s):
1) Sardine sandwich x 4

2) Nasi lemak x 4
3) Twiggies x 1
4) Cut apples x 3
5) Pringles x 1
6) Big bottle of Ice Mountain x 1
7) Big bottle of H2O x 1

Yet, we finished everything except for the Pringles. Hehe… It’s no wonder that our legs fell asleep after cycling for a while. They have probably gone on strike because our body weight is too heavy!

After a hard day of cycling up and down the slopes of Ubin, we ended the day with Satay at Potong Pasir Food Centre. Yummy!!! The Packcik sell the best satay around. He has been in the satay business all the way back from the good old Satay Club @ The Padang days. Uncle Jal would probably know him since he was also in that business there then. The satay is so good that we will go there just for satay. Hee!

Among the 3 of us, we took too many photos to share so here are the selected few:

Vin's 1st D&D with TPMS

Vin was all hyped and excited about the “Buffalo Dinner & Rain Dance” ever since they announced the theme. We had gone shopping a couple of weeks ago to find his costume and props. For someone who is always prudent, he bought a lot of things just because of the event. Things he bought:
1) Cowboy hat
2) Levi’s checked long sleeve shirt
3) Leather belt
4) Toy shotgun

The Company was in the mood to party that everyone had knocked off by 4pm. He was one of the first few to reach Hotel Inter-Continental. The main reason he was early was to ensure that he get a complimentary parking ticket. Even before the event started he was already busy chasing the Red Indians around with his shotgun and camera.

Vin the Bandit...The Cowboys Gang...

So many willing victims from the Red Indian tribe VS two resistant...

Negi, the chosen one from the Red Indian tribe to be sacrificed... After a day of "hard work", the Bandit looks for pretty girls for company...

Under the influence of alcohol, the Red Indians & Cowboys live peacefully together...

Just as the dinner started, he won the 46th Lucky Draw Early Bird prize. It was a huge picnic hamper. Even so, he was not happy because he sees it as an early disqualification which makes him ineligible for the bigger prizes that were given out later. This made Sel so annoyed as she have never won anything that was based on luck all her life!

Overall, it was fun although the food was not fantastic. Hmmm... Wonder what’s in line next year?

Budget Dinner

It is the high inflation rate and rising cost of living versus the relatively lower percentage of increment you get every year. To makes things worse is that as you age and mature, you get tied down with more financial responsibilities and liabilities. These days, wedding expenses really dig deep in to your pockets. Hence, most of our disposable income goes to saving for our wedding and we have to really tighten our belts.

So, we try to avoid eating out. And when we do, we will try to look for cheaper options. In the process, we stumbled upon “Sri Kamala Vilas Restaurant” at Buffalo Road.

We ordered 2 Teh Tarik and 1 Paper Masala Thosai...

Sel is oblivious to the world when she sees food...

Now you see it...

Now you don't!

Ta da... The bill is less than S$5! And we're stuffed :)

Good ay! Dinner for 2 can cost less than $5. Who knew?!

1st Weekend of 2009

We both have never kept any diaries or journals, what more blogs! This is something new for the both of us. So pardon us if we sound boring to you.

It’s first Saturday of the year. New year but same old schedule. Here’s how we spent our first Saturday of the year...

Lunch @ Rex
Of course we had the famous Chicken Rice. YUMMY!!! Once upon a time, we were so crazy about it that we have it for dinner at least twice a week. Vin is still crazy about it and it’s his dinner choice everyday if he has it his way. It is so sinful that we are still carrying the weight around. Bleh!

Haircut @ The Amara
Vin has this “sickness” that he has to have a schedule for his haircut. That is on every first weekend after payday. Anyway, the haircut is only S$10 and we both like the style so whatever makes him happy.

Audio House Sale @ Geylang
We had no real plans for the day so we head there to browse around. There was nothing much there. The space was quite small really. Frankly, we have not heard good stories about Audio House and have never bought anything from there.

Shopping @ Marine Parade

Traffic was super bad! It was really crowded there. But we still had a great time. Things we bought:
1) Slippers for Vin
2) Samsung E250 (black) for Papa’s B’day
3) 4 DVDs – The Simpsons Movie, A Beautiful Mind, Serendipity, Kate & Leopold
We had snacks at Swensen’s. We ordered rodeo wings, deep fried mushroom and cookie summit and cleaned up everything. Yummmm!!! We checked out the arcade before heading back. Had a race, some pilot action, some kiddy games and of course we never missed the table hockey game. One of us won the race while the other won the game. Well, you win some and you lose some...

On the first Sunday of the year, Sel cooked Asam Pedas following Ibu’s recipe.

Looks and smell like Asam Pedas. Even taste like Asam Pedas so we guess it’s a success. Hehe… Papa complemented that it was delicious and nobody had diarrhea. Yeay for Sel!

Note to ourselves, take pictures next time…
